Roy Munson (Woody Harrelson), un ex jugador de bolos, considerado como un genio de ese juego, educado desde pequeño para convertirse en un campeón, que pudo haber sido una estrella de no haberse topado con el traicionero Ernie McCracken (Bill Murray), conocido como Big Ern, al que Roy derrotó en un campeonato de 1979. Big Ern entonces, se vengó convenciéndole para que participara en una partida clandestina y luego le abandonó a su suerte frente a una enfurecida masa, que dejó su mano derecha hecha picadillo. Roy encuentra su salvación cuando ve a Ishmael Boorg (Randy Quaid) jugando en una bolera. Ambos se embarcan en un increíble viaje en el que conocen a Claudia (Vanessa Angel), y acabarán juntos en el gran torneo de Reno donde Roy vuelve a jugar después de 20 años.

Segundo largometraje de los gamberros hermanos Farely (“Dos tontos muy tontos”, “Algo pasa con Mary”). Como en sus otras películas, la supuesta comicidad está basada en la sal gruesa y en los políticamente más incorrecto que encuentren. El esquema argumental muestra a una pareja que se complementa para conseguir algo, en este caso el jugar a los bolos. Uno fue campeón hasta que se quedó manco y el otro es poco lelo pero es muy hábil con este juego. Como es habitual, como marca de fábrica de los Farrelly, cuenta con un humor simple, esperpéntico y nada elaborado y con un gusto especial en ridiculizar las desgracias ajenas.
