En 1914, Leo Harrigan (Ryan O’Neal), aspirante a abogado, acaba siendo contratado para escribir guiones de cine mudo y luego como director. Su amada se fuga con Buck Greenaway (Burt Reynolds) y Leo se muda a California donde asistirá al nacimiento de Hollywood, donde un grupo de jóvenes procedentes de distintos orígenes y profesiones, entrará a formar parte de este excitante mundo, haciendo cualquier cosa por alcanzar el éxito. Leo se verá perseguido por los matones que el Edison Trust envía para destruir a las productoras cinematográficas rivales, rodará toda clase de films y se tendrá una iluminación al ver en 1915 la premier de la obra seminal de D.W. Griffith titulada «El nacimiento de una nación».

Una historia sobre los orígenes del cine. En 1910, nace un nuevo espectáculo que alcanza una gran popularidad: el Nickelodeon, llamado así porque la gente pagaba un nickel (cinco centavos) por la entrada. Peter Bogdanovich volvió aquí a homenajear al cine, ahora narrando los orígenes de Hollywood y recupera una vez más a Ryan O'Neal y a su hija Tatum, que debutó y ganó el Oscar en "Luna de papel".
